The Lunar 251 area is underlain by mid Triassic to lower Jurassic Takla Group mafic volcanics and the mid Triassic Lunar Creek Ultramafic Complex. The oldest lithologies in the region are Stikine terrane mixed greenstone metamorphics and undivided sediments of the Devonian to Permian Asitka Group. The strata is intruded by Early and Middle Jurassic granodiorite and Late Triassic quartz monzonite.
Sampling by Hard Creek Mining in 2006 resulted in sample 359251 yielding 0.19 gram per tonne platinum, 0.015 gram per tonne palladium, 0.032 per cent nickel and 0.011 per cent cobalt (Assessment Report 29063). The sample was described as olivine pyroxenite with 3 per cent sulphides.
Work History
In 2006, Hard Creek Nickel Corp collected 38 rock samples from their Lunar claims.
Several gossanous areas, quartz veins, minor malachite stains and sulphide occurrences were found in the southeastern portions of the property, almost solely in the gabbro-diorite unit. Similar sulphide occurrences were found in the northwestern part of the complex, although quartz veins and gossans were less abundant. The majority of ultramafic outcrops encountered lacked significant sulphide mineralization.
Prior to Hard Creek Mining there was no evidence of other exploration on the Lunar claims. However, at least 65 rock geochemical samples were collected by a team of BC Geological Survey geologists and analyzed for platinum-group elements during a mapping exercise conducted in 1990.
